About Journal of Carcinogenesis

What is Journal of Carcinogenesis?

Journal of Carcinogenesis is an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal designed to bring together many aspects of research to develop the understanding of carcinogenesis.

Journal of Carcinogenesis considers manuscripts in many areas of carcinogenesis including: physical and chemical carcinogenesis and mutagenesis; processes influencing or modulating carcinogenesis, such as DNA repair; genetics, nutrition, and metabolism of carcinogens; the mechanism of action of carcinogens and modulating agents; epidemiological studies; and, the formation, detection, identification, and quantification of environmental carcinogens.

Despite the advances in the treatment of cancer and the increasing knowledge of the processes responsible for the disease, there is a gap in the understanding of molecular events leading to cancer and the mechanisms of action by anticancer agents. The field of carcinogenesis is far from being completely explored. Many novel ideas and concepts still need to be introduced into the field, and the results of several provocative experiments are yet to be disseminated and shared. There is a need for multidisciplinary research in the field and a forum for accelerated publication of results and Open Access to such publications would be greatly beneficial; these are the considerations that led to the birth of the online journal, Journal of Carcinogenesis.

Content overview

Journal of Carcinogenesis considers the following types of articles:

  • Commentaries - short, focused and opinionated articles on any subject within the journal scope. These articles are usually related to a contemporary issue, such as recent research findings, and are often written by opinion leaders invited by the Editorial Board.
  • Research - comprehensive reports of data from original research.
  • Review articles - comprehensive, authoritative, descriptions of any subject within the journal scope; these articles are usually written by opinion leaders that have been invited by the Editorial Board.
  • Short papers - articles of exceptional interest, intended for brief reports of findings. These will be considered for publication on a priority basis and are usually about 1500 words in length.

Peer review policies

  • Peer review in Journal of Carcinogenesis is designed to ensure that good science is published rapidly.
  • Journal of Carcinogenesis considers manuscripts spanning a wide range of scientific interests, as long as the results and conclusions are scientifically justified and not misleading. Articles that contribute to the significant advancement of knowledge in the field will be given wider publicity.
  • Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by two external experts. The authors are encouraged to submit names of potential reviewers to expedite the review process.

Edited by Gopala Kovvali, Journal of Carcinogenesis is supported by an international Editorial Board.

Publishing in Journal of Carcinogenesis

All articles will be listed in PubMed immediately upon acceptance (after peer review), and will be covered by PubMed Central, CAS and Embase.

Articles in Journal of Carcinogenesis should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. However, because articles in this journal are not printed, they do not have page numbers. Instead, they have a unique article number.

The following citation:

J Carcinog 2004, 2:1

refers to article 1 from volume 2 of the journal.

As an online journal, Journal of Carcinogenesis does not have issue numbers. Each volume corresponds to a calendar year.

To keep up to date with the latest articles from Journal of Carcinogenesis, why not register to receive alerts? Registration also enables you to customise your subject areas of interest, store your searches, and submit your manuscripts.

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to Journal of Carcinogenesis using the online submission system. Full details of how to submit a manuscript are given in the instructions for authors.

General journal policies

Journal of Carcinogenesis is published  by BioMed Central, an independent publisher committed to ensuring peer-reviewed biomedical research is Open Access. That means it is freely and universally accessible online, it is archived in at least one internationally recognised free access repository, and its authors retain copyright, allowing anyone to reproduce or disseminate articles, according to the BioMed Central copyright and licence agreement. Journal of Carcinogenesis however, has taken this further by making all its content Open Access.

Journal of Carcinogenesis's articles are archived in PubMed Central, the US National Library of Medicine's full-text repository of life science literature, and also in repositories at the University of Potsdam in Germany, at INIST in France and in e-Depot, the National Library of the Netherlands' digital archive of all electronic publications. The journal is also participating in the British Library's e-journals pilot project, and plans to deposit copies of all articles with the British Library.

BioMed Central is working closely with the Thomson Reuters (ISI) to ensure that citation analysis of articles published in Journal of Carcinogenesis will be available.

Journal of Carcinogenesis is able to deliver summaries of frequently updated content via Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds. These are accessible via the orange "XML" button at the top of the list of recent articles or the list of most accessed articles. For more information about RSS feeds see our publisher's website.

If you would like to help raise awareness of Journal of Carcinogenesis, why not download the journal's leaflet and poster? You will need Acrobat Reader to open them.
